Design and Technology
Design and Technology at Great Moor is led by Mrs Oliver & Miss Lofthouse.
In Design and Technology, children are taught the knowledge understanding and skills needed to engage in the process of designing, making and evaluating. Pupils develop their technical knowledge and understanding of a wider range of topics: creating structures; using electrical and mechanical systems in their own products; cooking food and sewing. We cover a wide range of topics using activities that are creative and practical.
Healthy living is important at GMJS, therefore cooking and nutrition is taught throughout KS2. Children prepare and cook a variety of dishes, from pizza to soup, using a range of cooking techniques. Children also think about seasonality when cooking, choosing item based on this. As well as this, they are taught to apply the values of nutrition and healthy eating to everyday life.
Throughout the DT process, the children are given many choices: choices about their target audience; choices about materials; choices about design; choices about method of joining, cutting, shaping and finishing. We believe that having a wide variety of choices is extremely important within DT.
By the end of KS2, we hope that children are able to build and apply knowledge, understanding and skills to produce high-quality, Purposeful products for a wide range of users.
